Goldwing Light Parade Scarborough
September 11th 2010

The evening GoldWings light parade is the main attraction of the weekend with crowds of holidaymakers and residents turning out to watch the parade.  The main gathering points for the crowds are at the Lifeboat Station in Foreshore Road and Sandside, with groups gathering along Marine Drive and Royal Albert Drive.

We hope that some members will wear fancy dress ... on any theme the wish ...  for the evening light parade. The idea is to turn the parade a carnival with loud music playing from the bikes' sound systems, sirens and horns sounding and decorated bikes where possible.  Of course all this depends on free luggage space available on the bikes as many of our members will be coming for the weekend.

Nevertheless the atmosphere will be electric and visitors will certainly be entertained.  As the parade returns to Burniston Road Car Park, a handful of the best illuminated machines will double back from the roundabout at Sandside to assemble in front of the lifeboat station for ten to fifteen minutes for public viewing and photographs.

Below is "Lord of the Wings" Steve Marr from Avon Wings in his St George costume, seen on a previous parade in Yorkshire.

The light parade’s start/finish point is Burniston Car Park north of Scarborough on the A165, about 700 meters up from the Peasholm Gap roundabout and mustering here starts at 6.30pm on Saturday evening.

Those arriving in the evening will be required to inscribe and display a sticker before joining the parade.  Great care should be taken when riding and parking in the car park as it will be getting dark from 7.00pm.

Two main safety points to note this year is there's absolutely no overtaking during the parade. And there will be no speeding off from the traffic lights in Foreshore Road, in either direction.

Again we will not be asking Scarborough Council for a road closure because there is only one set of traffic lights right where the main crowd of sightseers congregate. Last year at this point, the crowds were delighted to see the bikes stop at the lights, as it gave them an extra opportunity to take photographs, so this year will be no different.

The Mayor and Mayoress will arrive at 7.45pm to start the parade at 8.00pm and they will ride as pillion passengers on the parade’s leading trikes. One long blast on an air horn will announce that the parade will be starting in three minutes.  Three short blast of the air horn followed by one long blast will mean the parade is leaving.

When the parade ends we are inviting three or four illuminated bikes and trikes to park in front of the Lifeboat Station for 15 minutes so that the crowds can get more photographs.  Then it’s off to our base at Cayton Bay for the remainder of the evening’s entertainment, party time in the Oasis Showbar.
